I mean, people who live near huge computer stores like in the US probably couldn't care. However, the poor suckers who live in places where there is hardly any software available in stores, except those in the wrong language and that ought to be trashed before reaching the shelves, this is amazing. You can get almost all, more specific software, just by downloading and registering online. Except for Office suits, Graphic applications (well, actually you can get good editors such as Macromedia Fireworks 2 online) and Publishing applications, ya can get everything thru download. The main players in are probably Cyberian Outpost and Beyond.com. But there are also some software vendors such as Macomedia and Symantec, who sell some of their software directly through download.
